Abstract
Stroke is a neurological disorder caused by brain blood circulation disturbance. This occasion causing symptoms of Upper Motor Neuron syndrome, one of them is spasticity. Spasticity is difficult to overcome and it can cause disability. Untreated plantar flexor muscles spasticity may end with ankle joints range of motion limitation, that impact to the gait patterns. Kinesio taping (KT) is a modality of physical therapy that decreases abnormal muscle tone through sensory input of the mechanoreceptors and proprioceptive feedback without limiting the extent of joint motion. This study is one group experimental pre-post study. The purpose is to examine the effect of KT application on ankle range of motion (ROM) and plantar flexor muscle spasticity measured by Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) in 13 stroke subjects after 30 minutes and 24 hours of KT application. KT application uses a single Y pattern of inhibition technique and a 25% stretch above the gastrocnemius muscle. The result showed significant increase of ankle range of motion (p <0.05) after 30 minutes and 24 hours of KT application, also significant decrease of plantar flexor MAS (p <0.05) after 24 hours of KT application. Conclusion : KT application with a single Y pattern of inhibition technique in stroke subjects will increase ankle ROM after 30 minutes and 24 hours KT application, and decrease plantar flexor muscle spasticity after 24 hours KT application.
