Abstract
Vertical jump is common sport movements in sports such as volleyball game. Muscle power output is one of the key factors to create upward force in achieving maximal jump height. The objective of this study is to analyze the correlation of gluteus maximus (GM), vastus lateralis (VL), and gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) muscles to vertical jump performance on male volleyball athletes. Twenty one healthy subjects carried out three consecutive trials of vertical jump with countermovement technique, jump height calculated from each trial. To examine the muscle activity, surface electromyography (sEMG) was recorded of the muscles of GM, VL, and GL at both side during propulsion phase. The results demonstrated a significant and strong correlation between left GM (r=.532; p≤ .05), right VL (r=.670; p≤ .05) and left VL (r=.583; p≤ .05) to vertical jump height. Lower correlation coefficient were observed in right GM (r= .251; p≥.05), right GL (r=.225; p≥.05), and left GL (r=0.095; p≥.05). Furthermore, these results suggest that hip extensor and knee extensor muscles are important for optimizing the vertical jump performance with countermovement technique in the training and competition for male volleyball athletes. There were difference result in right and left gluteus showed that leg domination had a significant role in performing vertical jump.
