Dengue Virus Infection in a Pregnant Woman

Abstract

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne infection, caused by dengue virus in the Arbovirus group known as the genus Flavivirus. To establish the diagnosis, a serological examination, anti dengue IgM and IgG and virus isolation can be conducted. A 30-year-old female patient came to the Emergency Unit in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital with fever complaints for 3 days before entering the hospital, which was suddenly high, continuous throughout the day, no decreased temperature after consuming fever-lowering medication, accompanied by complaints of headache and upper abdominal pain. The patient also complained of nausea for 2 days, accompanied by vomiting 4 times in 1 day. From the results of anamnesis, physical examination and other examinations she was diagnosed with a second pregnancy at 29/30 weeks, single, alive, intrauterine, head location monitoring Febris et causa with suspected Dengue Fever and hypocalemia. From this clinical criteria, the patient was diagnosed with dengue fever based on symptoms of sudden 3-day fever, spontaneous bleeding in the form of petechiae, thrombocytopenia, elevated hematocrit level, and positive IgG IgM dengue serology. During the treatment, the patient did not show deterioration of clinical conditions and the severity of dengue disease. The manifestation of bleeding was not increased and there was no shock condition. The patient was monitored regularly in her pregnancy and fetal conditions. There were no signs of pregnancy disorder and during monitoring of stable fetal vital conditions. In general, the management of dengue infection during pregnancy is no different from that without pregnancy and is conducted with a good prognosis, especially when no massive bleeding manifestations or dengue shock syndrome episodes are present
