Role of Nonstructural-1 Protein (NS1) Dengue Virus in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Pathogenesis

Abstract
Dengue virus infection is a rapidly spreading arboviral disease and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in most tropical and subtropical regions. There is currently no cure or vaccine for this infection, and the efforts for vector control and clinical management have not been successful and effective in reducing vector populations and case fatality rates. NS1 has an essential role for dengue virus viability and does not have clear biological activity, but seems to have particular immunological activities. NS1 proteins and anti-NS1 antibodies have a role associated with the autoimmune response mechanism that occur in the pathogenesis of dengue virus infection. Anti-NS1 antibodies show cross-reaction activity against platelets and human endothelial cells and cause a risk of hemorrhage and plasma leakage.
