Abstract
Gender bias is produced and reproduced through, among others, language used by media. Some research has been done in this regard, for example how media often use the word 'beautiful' for women who work in the public space—beautiful police officer, beautiful politician—although appearance has nothing to do with her performance. One type of news that is quite vulnerable to this kind of bias is criminal news. So often that female victim continued being marginalized in the news because of the narratives written by journalists. They can use extremely literal language when descripting the victim’s (usually female) body. However, this research focuses on a case in which the perpetrator is female. Analysis on series of news about genital cutting case featuring Abdul Muhyi and his partner, Neneng, on Detik.com found that while the position of social actors is reversed—male victim, female perpretrator—gender biases remain in the narrative. Media language could help reinforce, or in the other hand, reconstruct stereotypes and biases. Gender literacy program for all journalists involved in a newsroom is important in order to avoid any form of stigmatization, objectivities, and labelling in news product.
