Establish Islamic Caliphate in Indonesia: Critical Discourse Analysis on the Al-Islam Da’wah Bulletin

Abstract

The mass media has a strategic position in shaping public opinion, which contains a certain ideology. The Al-Islam da’wah bulletin by Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia is one of the most consistent media platforms to establish Islamic caliphate in Indonesia. This study aims to dismantle the ideological construction (khilafah) on Al-Islam da’wah bulletin. This study uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. Data was collected through the original manuscripts of the Al-Islam da’wah bulletin, literature, and research articles. Unit analysis of this research is text, context, and interpretation. Results indicate that the Al-Islam da’wah bulletin constructs the reality that caliphate is a Muslim duty that must be carried out immediately despite much contradiction. In addition, the political context also affects text production. Finally, the various interpretations of the caliphate application in Indonesia is a challenge that must be faced in the context of nation and state
