Abstract
Modernization and the media have reduced the meaning and function of hijab as a form of religious obedience and identity. Hijab have mingled with fashion, creating hijab fashion trends. A new, modern, religious social class has arisen. Descriptive qualitative analysis is used in this paper, with a sample of STAIN students of Sorong, West Papua. The results show that State Islamic High School (STAIN) Sorong students have been affected by the religious mediatization of hijab fashion. Although Islam is a minority religion in the study location of Eastern Indonesia, they are part of a consumption culture where purchasing hijab no longer involves consideration of the true usefulness of hijab, nor signs and prices. STAIN Sorong students show their identities as Muslimahs by using hijab, as well as displaying their identities as modern women through fashion hijab.
