Abstract
The modern era has created rapid currents of globalization. Similarly, the lifestyles of communities also follow the currents of globalization. In the global reality, more and more people are communicating using emerging phenomena to take them to a higher level socially, often called “social climbing”. This research aims to examine and understand how the social media platform Instagram is used as a tool to achieve the self-actualization of a higher social status. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through observations, interviews, and a literature review. The results of this research explain why the participants from Bengkulu used Instagram, as well as how they framed themselves within a certain reality according to their motives (e.g. social climbing). Social media websites are often used to show things as different from the reality.
