Abstract
This study aimed to reveal how Jawa Pos portrayed women’s sexual abuse between May 8 and December 31, 2016, using Sara Mills’ feminist discourse analysis. During the pre-observation activities, Jawa Pos published news related to women’s sexual abuse, which became trending headlines in other mass media. Hence, it was necessary to confirm the validity of the news articles by analyzing them using relevant approaches. This study used a qualitative design, using documentation and interviews as data collection techniques. The news articles used as the objects of this study were chosen using purposive sampling. The data were then analyzed using Sara Mills’ feminist discourse analysis, based on both subject–object and reader views. The results show that there was written prejudice against women in the discourse of Jawa Pos. Among the nine articles in Jawa Pos newspaper, women were personified as naughty, seductive, graceful, charming, willing-to-sacrifice, and sexually male-controlled women. On the contrary, men were defined as heroic, wise, not responsible, and sexually dominating people. The pictures created are associated with the patriarchal religious, cultural, and social context.
