Abstract

A buzzer, in communication science, is a communicator who delivers messages to audiences and is able to affect others’ opinions. When buzzers first appeared, they were usually used by companies to promote goods through social media. There are numerous objects that can be talked about by buzzers, such as products, experiences, and even notable figures’ profiles. Hence, the viral messages posted by buzzers not only affect a product or company’s image but also shape the images of certain individuals, known as personal branding. This can be seen through buzzers’ intense posts about Puteri Indonesia, a beauty pageant to select the country’s representative for international beauty pageants. The great amount of information related to Puteri Indonesia circulating on the Internet plays a big role in promoting the contestants’ profiles on social media so that she can be better recognized compared to other countries’ contestants. This affects how people judge the contestants, especially through their personal branding on social media, for example on Instagram. Moreover, these days, social media have the power to heavily influence public opinion.
