Abstract
The heterogeneous communities of Madura have both unique socio-cultural profiles and various problems in their lives. One of the interesting issues for the writer is the application of the Socah language as an intercultural communication medium in the communities living in coastal areas, particularly in the sub-district of Socah, Bangkalan. Most of the people there communicate using the Javanese-Madurese language. The presence of this Javanese-Madurese language is due to the acculturation process and cultural assimilation influenced by the Javanese language of Surabaya, Gresik, Lamongan, and Babat dialects. This study applied qualitative research that employed purposive samples as data, i.e. the Socah village, the Jung Anyar village, and the Dakiring village because they had experienced language acculturation. After analysis and discussion, it was clear that there were four indicators of language functions there; (1) language as a personal language, (2) language as a regulative authority/control, (3) language as a reference, and (4) language for imagination.
