Abstract

This paper aims to critically explore the reproduction of gender and sexuality discourse on LGBT sub-culture (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) that rejects heteronormativity as a patriarchal and repressive social structure in the narratives displayed on Facebook. This issue was triggered by the statement of the Minister for Research, Technology and Higher Education, Muhammad Nasir, stating that the LGBT group corrupted the nation’s morality, thus, it was necessary to prohibit its existence on campus. This issue arose as a response to the pros and cons of establishing counseling services ‘Support Group and Resource Center on Sexuality Studies’ at Universitas Indonesia. Using media reviews and critical theories, this paper analyzes texts containing ‘LGBT’ keywords in Facebook in the form of ‘statuses’ on the users’ personal accounts as the primary data. In the results, it was discovered that, as regularity, there was always an aspect of structure in the language. Nevertheless, the discourse aspect of language rejected continuity if it presupposed stability and consistency because there would always be movement in interdiscursivity that brought together the ideology involved. Patriarchy is shaped, familiarized, and confirmed from period to period and in various contexts where it has perpetuated a hierarchical structure. As the worst-case scenario, as views, mindsets, cultures, and ideologies, patriarchy not only legitimizes the supremacy of men over women as a natural state but also brutally removes a variety of identity choices that are not subject to normality as represented by the categories of men/women and masculine/feminine. Support for LGBT groups materializing through written texts on social media does not necessarily involve openness in the form of recognition from the identity owners. Netizens mostly use a third-person point of view that places them as supporters or defenders of the movement and the existence of their identity.
