Abstract
Nowadays, mainstream mass media has become the main source of information in society. Therefore, the mass media often becomes the reference and source of representation for many things, one of which is gender; where it often informs gender unequally like placing men higher than women who are often represented as marginal people and described as powerless. As a form of resistance against the mainstream mass media with all of its hegemony, there arises an alternative media phenomenon, one of which is called zine. As an alternative media, it is used by marginal people to convey uncommon issues, including women to speak up their aspirations about equality. This article aims to describe the representation of women in zine as an independent alternative media and emerges as a counterculture to the mainstream mass media. The method used in the writing is the literature review, in which the authors gathered data from papers that have been published previously, including scientific journal articles, books, zine itself, and other supporting documents. The findings obtained are how women regain their subjectivity in the message-producing process of zine making, so there is a difference of women’s representation in zine and mainstream mass media.
