White Matter Changes in Neurodegenerative and Global Cortical Atrophy Scale Correlation in Older Patients Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract
Abstract: The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between white matter changes (WMC) quantified by the Fazekas scale with brain atrophy quantified by global cortical atrophy (GCA) in older patients. This study involves 83 older patients who fit the inclusion criteria during the period of April 2015 – April 2016. The quantification was analyzed statistically with SPSS. There are more male patients (54.2%) than female patient (45.8%) with the mean age being 67.42 ± 6.47 (standard deviation) years. Fazekas grade 1 is more common in the age group 60-74 years (elder), while Fazekas grade 3 is more common in the age group 75-90 years (old). The highest prevalence in female patients is Fazekas grade 1, while Fazekas grade 2 is highest in male patients. GCA grade 2 is the most frequent in both the group of 60-74 years (elder) and the group of 75-90 years (old). Both female and male groups are also dominated by GCA grade 2. Statistical analysis using Spearman’s two-tail correlation test showed r=0.611 and p=0.000 (p<0.05) which means there is significant correlation between WMC quantified with the Fazekas scale and brain atrophy quantified with the GCA scale.
