Abstract

Abstract: Intensive and prolonged physical training in athletes induces to cardiovascular remodeling such as increased of left ventricular mass (LVM). Resistance training is an effective tool for stimulating muscle hypertrophy and improving strength in athletes. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of fat free mass (FFM) and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) with LVM in Indonesian elite athletes.This is a cross sectional study, held in Hasan Sadikin Hospital from April to August 2017. A group of elite rowers and wrestlers were evaluated for LVM by echocardiography and body composition (FFM, SMM) by bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA). Data were analyzed with univariate analysis. A total of 26 elite athletes (11 wrestlers and 15 dragon boat rowers), aged 23±2.13 years old, were enrolled in this study. Analysis of all subjects showed significant correlation between LVM-SMM (r=0.483, pvalue=0.014 ) and LVM-FFM (r=0.531, pvalue=0.006). Subgroup analysis showed significant correlation in wrestlers, but non-significant in rowers. In wrestlers, SMM and FFM might be used to detect increasing of LVM.
