Abstract
Abstract: One of Indonesian Indonesia’s potentially traditional foods is the purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.). It contains protein and anthocyanin, which are two of the important components to in decreasing thee oxidative stress and muscle damage induced by high high-intensity resistance exercise. The aim of this research was to analyze the effects of purple sweet potato (PSP) to in decreasinge levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and recovering muscle damage after resistance exercise. This study used a pretest– posttest experimental design with 10 ten males as the subjects, with the inclusion criteriaswho were aged 21-–32 years;, had not recently taking taken particular drugs (such as analgesics, aspirin, and anti-inflammationinflammatories); had not recently consumeding alcohol; did not haved injuriesy and healthyor ill health; and had signinged informed consent forms. The subjects were given 300 grams of PSP 300 grams for three times in a day after resistance exercise. The resistance exercise was given in the form of an eccentric type with a weight machine in the form of a squat, which that was divided into six sets with ten repetitions and a one one-minute rest interval between sets. The resistance exercise was given at 75% of 1RM (one-repetition maximum). Muscle damage was observed using maximum strength and muscle pain. Levels of MDA were analyzed before and after the resistance exercise to determine the changes in oxidative stress through blood serum analysis. The intervention of PSP after resistance exercise significantly decreased levels of MDA and increased muscle strength 24 hours after exercise;, however, it did not decrease the muscle pain of the subjects. This implies that PSP was has the potential as an alternative consumption to decrease levels of MDA and recover muscle damage after resistance exercise.
