Abstract
Diarrhea is defined as three or more loose or liquid stools per day. Acute diarrhea occurs for less than 14 days, while persistent diarrhea occurs for longer than 14 days. This research aimed to determine the laboratory results of children with acute and persistent diarrhea at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya from January to December 2016. There were 176 acute diarrhea patients and 13 chronic diarrhea patients during that period. The results of this research were 54.5% infant patients (< 28 days - < 12 months) with acute diarrhea and 53.8% with chronic diarrhea. There was no significant difference between age, weight, leukocyte count, thrombocyte count, sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium level between acute and persistent diarrhea (p > 0.05). A significant difference was found between the duration of hospital stay, Hb count, and HCT count between acute and persistent diarrhea (p ≤ 0.05)
