The Effectiveness of Fish Oil Containing Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Improving Quality of Life of Asthmatic Outpatients in Surabaya

Abstract

Fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids is expected to reduce side effects of synthetic drugs and open opportunities in its production especially for asthmatic patients. The purpose of this research was to analyze its effectiveness in quality of life of asthmatic patients. The research method was pre-post test design with this oil for six weeks. Respondents were adult asthmatic patients analyzed using purposive sampling method. The sample size was 27 people. The use of Questionnaire of Quality of Life on asthmatic patients was reliable on the effect of activity (r=0,796>0.38), the symptoms (r=0,792>0,38), emotion (r=0,791>0,38), and environment (0,812>0,38). The intervention has been shown to have a significant effect on quality of life. As many as 81.48% of respondents experienced the improvement of quality of life in the first three weeks but there were only 70.37% who still experienced itin six weeks. The results of ANOVA-test showed significant changes in three weeks intervention with p<0.05(0,002). However, there was no significant changes between the three and six weeks intervention with p>0.05(0,313). Fish oil fatty acids containing omega-3 was effective in improving quality of life within 3 weeks and increased until in the sixth weeks although it was not significantly different.
