Characteristics of Children With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Hospital Based Study

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic abnormality with multi-factor etiology. Some of risk factors of type 2 DM, namely age, sex, genes, gestational diabetes of mother during pregnancy, exclusive breastfeeding history, and physical activity. Data from Dr. M. Djamil in Padang hospital in 2014 showed that there were 38 children who suffered DM in the Outpatient Installation and 18 children in Inpatient Installation. Purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of children with type 2 DM in dr. M. Djamil Padang Hospital. This was a cross-sectional study with total samples were 69 children by accidental sampling method. Respondents were the mothers of children with characteristics of children obtained through an in-depth interview by questionnaires. Results showed that the average age of children was 10 years and the most were female children, the family histories of diabetes mellitus were 30.4%, and children who were not active in daily physical activity were 49.3%. Study found that physical activity and family history of DM had an association with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus among children. To prevent further complications, it is necessary to do exercise routinely or be more active in physical activities besides controlling food intake especially calorie intake.
