Abstract

The decision about whether to breastfeed is a challenge for every mother. First time mothers especially need more support and assistance to encourage them to successfully give exclusive breastfeeding. The objective of this study was to analyze the breastfeeding decision among first time mothers. This was observational research with prospective cohort study design. The sample size was 32 first time mothers in the eastern part of Surabaya. The results showed that 56.2% of mothers have a poor knowledge related to breastfeeding, but only a few mothers were actively looking for information related to breastfeeding during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The results showed that there were 93.8% of mothers giving colostrum to their babies, 62.5% doing skin-to-skin contact straight after labor, but only 40.6% giving exclusive breastfeeding until the first week of the postpartum period. The results also showed that 40.6% of mothers were influenced by their husband to decide anything related to breastfeeding. It can be concluded that most first time mothers need to be more actively educated themselves to prepare for breastfeeding and health care workers also need to educate first time mothers and their husbands about breastfeeding, and particularly about exclusive breastfeeding
