Association Between Gathering Activity and Obesity in Adolescents in Surabaya, Indonesia

Abstract

Basic Health Research in Indonesia for the year 2013 reported that the prevalence of adolescent obesity in Indonesia and Surabaya were 1.6% and 3.1% respectively. Obesity can be caused by many factors, affecting physical, mental and social health. This study aims to analyze the association between gathering activity and obesity in adolescents. These activities included eating, drinking, smoking, chatting and physical activity. This study uses observational analytics and data collection was achieved using questionnaires. The sample was calculated based on the hypothesis test formula using simple random sampling and the data analysis used chi-square and multiple logistic regression. We found a significant association between age, sex, a frequency of gathering, intake of fast food, instant noodles, street foods, snacks, physical activity, and obesity. Low activity level was the high-risk factor for adolescent obesity. Future research might investigate social support (peer, parents, teacher) to increase physical activity as a meaningful variable of obesity prevention that influences adolescents’ health status in Surabaya
