Abstract
The purposes of this study were to know the intake of benzene into a worker's body, the characteristics of carcinogenic risk or Excess Cancer Risk (ECR) on the workshop employees and the safe duration of benzene exposure in a motor workshop area. The research methods were descriptive approach, observational, and cross sectional sampling with a population of motor workshop workers in Surabaya totaling 15 people. Data analysis was conducted descriptively to determine the safe duration of benzene exposure to workers. The ECR calculation shows that only 6 of the 15 workers were at risk of cancer. The conclusion from this research is that benzene concentration of 1,267 mg/m³ (0,3974 ppm) in motor workshop was under the Threshold Limit (NAB), but this was based on the calculation of carcinogenic risk of all workers still at risk of cancer with continuous exposure without control efforts. The recommendations were to limit the exposure and provide a food intake that can help the metabolism of benzene in the body to not be toxic. Suggestions for further research are to research effect the enzyme CYP2E1 in eliminating benzene from the body
