Abstract

The term, healthy city, is a concept used in public health and urban design as recommended by the WHO to stress the impact of policies on human health. It emphasizes the multi-dimensionality of health as laid out in WHO's constitution and the Ottawa Charter. A healthy city is a place that is continually creating and improving the physical, social, and political environments and expanding the community resources that enable individuals and groups to support each other in performing all the functions of life. This paper reviews several journals related to human settlements and healthy cities to support the argument that, to establish an urban settlement in a healthy city, people have to talk about sustainability or sustainable development. Of all references and concepts overlapping each other about human settlements, healthy city and sustainable development are possibly the most important . Although some references seem to be unrelated to health issues directly such as urban planning, they also require that in order for a holistic human settlement to take place, the human welfare aspect should be realized as a proxy of social sustainability. To establish urban settlements in a healthy city, people have to understand and establish sustainability or a sustainable development.
