Abstract
The ever-increasing demand for computation power has driven cloud infrastructures to expand at an unprecedented rate and scale. Moreover, many clouds have recently also begun to encompass heterogeneous computing architectures. The complexity associated with this unprecedented scale and heterogeneity of resources is giving rise to many challenges that have to be addressed if a sustainable cloud management environment is to be maintained. These issues include efficient cloud services delivery, the rise in resource management complexity, efficient power management, and complexity in infrastructure organization. These issues are considered holistically through the creation of a selfmanaging and self-organizing cloud architecture. In this novel cloud architecture, known as CloudLightning, the entire cloud service stack is addressed, including the design and development of new application deployment mechanisms, crossbusiness functions service deliver models, self-organized and self-managed cloud application execution environments, schemes for organizing heterogeneous resources, and strategies for unifying infrastructure configurations. The strategic combination of these innovations and customisations results in a seamless integration of cloud applications and cloud services with the underlying resources.
