Abstract

In the theory of Coulomb, Rankine and Mononobe, the unit earth pressure is distributed in a triangle along the height of the wall and the point of resultant earth pressure is at 1/3 height from the bottom of the wall, which are different from a mass of theoretical analysis and experiments. Based on the assumption of planar sliding surface in Coulomb's theory, the moment equilibrium of the sliding soil behind the wall is taken into account, the dynamic distribution factor of seismic acceleration is introduced, the mathematical equations of unit earth pressure and the point of resultant earth pressure are proposed, and the verification of the new method in this paper is conducted by comparing with the results obtained from traditional theories and previous tests. The results show that the point of resultant earth pressure is at 0.33H~0.42H in the static state and 0.40H~0.50H in the seismic state respectively rather than remaining at 1/3 height from the bottom and the unit earth pressure is distributed in a nonlinear form which is close to a parabola rather than in a triangle, which are generally consistent with the test results and should be taken seriously in engineering projects.
