Abstract
Without abstraction, third party maintenance can hardly make evolve (even documented) software applications. In this paper we address the problem of re-engineering software applications to add abstraction in order to improve their continuous evolution. In three different case studies, we make use of Model-Driven Reverse Engineering for extracting component software architecture, for aligning business and application logic in information systems and for re-engineering a holonic software manufacturing process. We report lessons learnt for future developments.
