Molecular Mechanisms of Osteoporosis: A Road Map for Osteoporosis Therapeutics

Abstract
Osteoporosis is widely spread throughout the world and becomes a serious public health problem. It is mainly caused by the imbalance of the bone remodeling process, that bone resorption (led by osteoclasts) overwhelms bone formation (led by osteoblasts). This review summarizes several important molecular mechanisms in osteoporosis and their corresponding treatment. Among them, drug therapy and cell therapy are two major therapies that are commonly used. Drug therapy is clinically mature, but there are some side effects that cannot be used for a long time. Cell therapy can cure osteoporosis, and it does little harm to the human body. However, cell therapy is clinically immature, and there may be ethical issues. More detailed molecular mechanisms require further investigation and could provide a promising direction for osteoporosis treatment and prevention.
