4 EMBRACING OF DIVERSE
CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS
The main role of education is to build inclusive
societies. Education should not be promoted only to
create professionals for fulfilling the demand of labor
market but education can acts as a base to cultivate
the values for social cohesion and can harness the
potential of young citizens to construct inclusive
societies. The pedagogies and learning materials need
to be inclusive and should promote diversity. To
avoid marginalization the stereotypes need to be
avoided by including different narratives and
perspectives. There are various social changes
happening at a fast pace in the contemporary society,
the cause of these changes varies like technology,
social media, globalization, migration, etc. From
individualism the societies are transforming towards
pluralism (Sciortino, 2021) thus inculcating the sense
of universal belongingness impacting the perceptions,
attitudes and behaviors of the learners by challenging
the prejudices and fears is essential.
The educational institutions need to be careful in
their planning and implementation of educational
programs and policies to foster respect and mutual
understanding among learners. In educational
institutions proper career guidance should be
provided, the cultural barriers needs to be removed
and the cases of harassment need to be dealt strictly.
It is essential to integrate democratic competencies in
the curriculum so as to promote democratic values
and active citizenship. By facilitating interaction and
developing relationships, the learners understand
their role in the society. Inclusive education also
fosters understanding and appreciation of diverse
cultures, promoting social cohesion and harmony
within communities. Education can act as a tool for
empowering the learners to transform the society
(Broom, 2015). By instilling principles such as
empathy, compassion, tolerance and respect for
diversity, education nurtures a sense of social
responsibility. When educated learner are involved in
consistent interactions and channels of
communication then the probability of enhancing
adaptive capacities increases ultimately shaping a
more equitable and democratic society.
Education helps in fulfilling professional
requirements although the tangible results may or
may not be instant. The education should equip the
learners with the skills to become responsible and
active citizens. It should make them competent not
only to face the global competition but also to
discover untapped opportunities and find solutions to
the problems thus engaging in playing active role to
create sustainable future. Employability is a key
outcome of education and training to instill skills,
knowledge and competencies of workers. In India
extensive employability skill training initiatives have
started. These need to be framed to tackle the problem
of unemployment and to meet the changing market
demands. The employment strategy needs to take care
of institutional support for learner employment. It
should be focused on reshaping or transforming the
human capabilities, life skills, attitudes and mindset.
The entrepreneurial spirit should be nurtured to
empower the learners to develop innovative solutions
and to create employment opportunities. If
undertaken in a planned and systematic way it will
have far reaching impact on social development. The
education provided should enhance employability
skills among the learner but at the same time the
education programs should not be limited only to the
enhancement of employability skills but articulation
of theory and practice is required for nurturing
learner’s cognitive, meta-cognitive, social, emotional
and technical skills to form the foundation upon
which they can engage in shaping communities for
social development. The development of
competencies needs to be based on the combination
of knowledge, skills and values to empower the
learners to promote social cohesion, human values
and sustainability.
The training and development need not only be
limited to the enhancement of professional
knowledge, skills and expertise for effective
curriculum delivery but also teachers need to be
sensitized towards the diverse cultural backgrounds
of learner so as to make the learning in the classrooms
more impactful. The teachers need to go through self
analysis so as to understand and be aware of their own
biases and stereotypes, this analysis is important to
keep a check for not transferring these to the learners.
The flexibility should be given to teachers to align the
curriculum as per the present times requirement and
adapt to the individual learning needs. The teachers
need to be technologically trained (OECD, 2016) to
use participatory methodologies while imparting
education so that the learners’ voices and concerns
are heard and addressed appropriately. As quoted by
William Arthur Ward cited in Fred (2010) “The
mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher
inspires.”
The teachers need to be aware of the teaching
pedagogies should not merely focus on the
transmission of knowledge but it should aim to create
learning environment in which learners can develop
their self learning skills. The learners need to be at the
