Abstract
With the augmentation of population's life expectancy as a whole, there is a need for intelligent applications to assist citizens in their daily activities. Ambient Assisted Living – AAL – are emerging as a way to allow technology and medical assistance to help people who need special supervision, providing support to medical emergencies. AAL are equipped with ubiquitous technologies, and use sensors as their main element for environmental data collection, providing systems with updated information. To offer personal home assis-tance, these computer-supported environments detect situations of interest such as the patient´s current health state, and proactively act to adapt the home environment accordingly to the patient´s specific needs. This paper presents results from an approach to support adaptive behavior in AAL. In particular, we discuss the design of intelligent systems for monitoring and adaptation of AAL. Additionally, we describe a middleware for the management of pervasive applications, which is capable of detecting the current situation of a citizen and identifying the most suitable action.
