Abstract
One of the main characteristics of academic writing in English is the language used in texts which is more complex than in spoken language. This can be seen from the use of noun phrases in an academic text which is denser than in a spoken one. This article is part of the research which is to explore the students' use of subject noun phrases and their pronouns in sentences of their thesis writing. This qualitative research used documents in the form of the 'Background' section of 'Chapter I Introduction' of ten thesis from the students who graduated in 2018 at English Letters Study Program of Universitas Khairun to collect data. The data collected were analyzed using content analysis. Findings from the data analysis were then discussed.
