Abstract

This research, which aims to find out native reader’s expectations toward EFL students’ writing, employs a descriptive qualitative design as it observes and analyses the Indonesians’ essay writings. In collecting the data, the teacher asked the students to discuss the cultural topics given in the form of group discussion. Then, each student’s essay writing was commented by the native speaker related to her expectation on the writing based on the given topic. The result revealed that several students have the tendency to use their native language pattern, although they wrote essays in English. Besides, grammatical mistakes and inappropriate vocabularies usage were found in most essays, which mainly contributed to determining and fulfilling the native reader’s expectation and resulted in native reader’s misunderstanding. The findings also showed that most students had problems with the language use. Furthermore, the clarity of writing could not be seen in the majority of the Indonesian essay writings. Nevertheless, there were several students who were able to write essays using appropriate words and effective patterns.
