Abstract
Interpretation of tissue fluorescence spectra can be complicated due to interplay with tissue optics. We have developed a photon propagation approach for correction of fluorescence on absorption in two realistic scenarios: when fluorophores are located a) on the surface of the turbid tissue and b) in a layer inside the turbid tissue. The approach takes into account the diffuse reflection of the tissue at excitation and emission wavelengths and does not require any precise measurement of optical properties (e.g., coefficient of absorption). The approach can be implemented using an inexpensive imaging setup and can be used in any setting.
