Why It is Hard to Find AI in SMEs: A Survey from the Practice and How to Promote It

Abstract
AI seems to be an important aspect of Industry 4.0, which was introduced about 10 years ago. The main results of interviews about AI with 411 people from 68 companies have been summarized in this paper. Most of those companies were SMEs. Main challenges for the application of AI have been identified. Concrete solutions that can support the implementation and application of AI are presented. The need to adequately support AI in SMEs is underlined and specified.
