Abstract
The primary university faculty activities are Teaching, Research, Applied practice (e.g. consulting), and Professional Service (including administrative activities). It often happens that the scope and specifics of faculty competencies and expertise are not well understood by colleagues within their university or outside. This paper presents a new approach for mapping faculty competencies in universities, focusing on three dimensions (3D): research, teaching, and applied practice. The approach was demonstrated at a business school, which is a part of a large university. The need for the knowledge map there was driven by the development of the new school strategy and the demand for more intense industry-university collaboration. The survey method was applied for data collection and involved 63 faculty members. The data about the faculty’s expertise was structured using predefined subject areas and presented in the form of digital knowledge maps. These maps represent areas of expertise, including well-developed and underdeveloped areas, providing a comprehensive overview of faculty capabilities. The suggested approach gives universities an opportunity to create such knowledge maps for evidence-based talent and knowledge management.
