Abstract
For the explainability and interpretability of the outcomes of all forensic investigations, including those in media forensics, the quality assurance and proficiency testing work performed needs to ensure not only the necessary technical competencies of the individual practitioners involved in an examination. It also needs to enable the investigators to have sufficient understanding of machine learning (ML) or ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI) systems used and are able to ascertain and demonstrate the validity and integrity of evidence in the context of criminal investigations. In this paper, it is illustrated on the example of applying the multi-class steganalysis tool Stegdetect to find steganographic messages hidden in digital images, why the explainability and interpretability of the outcomes of media forensic investigations are a challenge to researchers and forensic practitioners.
